about the Middle years

Becoming Me

The time spent in Middle Years is a unique period of student growth and development. The Years 5 – 8 ‘Becoming Me’ program is designed to extend students' academic skills, promote personal development and encourage attitudes of responsible citizenship through a variety of learning experiences. This includes interdisciplinary learning across a range of academic areas and an extensive outdoor education program. With a focus on smaller class sizes and targeted growth in Literacy and Numeracy for each student, the Middle Years program prepares students for their transition in to the Senior Years.

Our teaching philosophy and practice is based on the understanding that during these years students undergo significant physical, emotional, social and academic development. The diversity of curricular and co-curricular activities available to students enables them to accept increasing levels of responsibility for their own learning and behaviour.

Positive Psychology is explicitly taught in the Middle Years and integrates with both the Religious and Values Education Curriculum and the Personal and Social Learning program.

All students in the Middle Years are required to have a notebook computer. Information and Communications Technology is integrated into all areas of the curriculum. Years 5 and 6 are allocated a school notebook, and in Year 7 students are required to purchase their own. Students are able to access their assignments and homework online via our own intranet, ‘Zenith’. This learning management system allows parents, too, to keep track of their child’s deadlines and assignments.

There are many opportunities for students to experience leadership challenges within the Middle Years. Middle Years students will work across a number of specific briefs and assist in a range of activities including class captain roles, House leaders and SRC.  All students are encouraged to develop their leadership skills through our Personal and Social Learning program. Year 7 and 8 students participate in the Personal Development program providing them with access to a range of life skills and community service activities.
